Based out of the renowned Rayner vineyard in McLaren Vale, Bondar wines has made a big impression on the Australian wine scene. Established by husband and wife duo, Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly in 2012, their commitment to crafting exceptional wines has been widely lauded, including being named James Halliday’s ‘Best New Winery’ back in 2017.
The 2022 Bondar Violet Hour Shiraz is crafted from hand-picked fruit from 65+ year old fruit planted on the Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. Beautifully fragrant on the nose, the palate is silky and soft, while still delivering intensely flavoured dark red fruit flavours. Another beautiful rendition of McLaren Vale Shiraz that is a relative bargain at this price.
Reviews of the 2021 vintage included below:
“97 Points. Sourced from Rayner vineyard estate plantings dating back to 1947. Uncoils itself like a snake after a nap on a sunny afternoon, the colour rich and deep, as is every aspect of the wine on the lustrous bouquet and palate. Yet it’s also a tapestry of silk and velvet, a little more than medium bodied. Bargain bonanza.” – James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.
“94 Points. I like that these Bondar reds only use older oak. Dried flower and herb perfume, blackberry and boysenberry, an iodine/oyster shell thing happening, plus brown spices. It’s medium to full-bodied, dark fruit and savoury flavours, spice and beef jerky, with dense silty tannin, and a gently toasty finish of fine length. Good stuff. Beautifully made. Tasted: Sep22 14% alc. $32.00 Screwcap Drink: 2022 – 2030+”- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
